# How to Find Angel Investors for an Early-Stage Startup

> Most founders find angel investors through warm introductions from other founders, through regional angel networks and pitch events, and through targeted outreach to people who know their industry. Angels back the team, early evidence of demand and a concrete plan for the money. Tax schemes such as SEIS in the UK or INVEST in Germany make the pitch easier.

Every angel investor you will meet has a folder of unread pitch decks. Most of them arrived as cold emails sent to a list. The decks that get read usually come with a name attached: "Sarah said I should talk to you."

That is the uncomfortable core of angel fundraising. The skill is less about the deck and more about getting into the right inbox through the right person. The good news is that the right person is often reachable within two introductions.

## What angels are, and what you are signing up for

Angel investors are individuals who put their own money into very young companies. Many are former founders or senior operators, and the best of them bring customer introductions, hiring help and credibility with later investors along with the cheque.

That cuts both ways. A good angel opens doors. A difficult one wants a weekly call and an opinion on your logo. Do the same diligence on them that they do on you: speak to founders they backed, including ones whose companies failed.

## Where to find angel investors

Start with other founders. Anyone a year or two ahead of you has probably raised from angels and can introduce you. Help them first where you can. Founder networks run on reciprocity.

Beyond that:

- Regional angel networks and syndicates, which run pitch evenings for pre-screened startups.
- University entrepreneurship programmes, which often hold demo days with investors in the room. German spin-offs coming out of the [EXIST Business Start-up Grant](https://gruenderkurse.de/en/incorporation-and-funding/exist-startup-grant/) get exactly this kind of exposure.
- Pitch competitions run by chambers of commerce, regional development banks and accelerators.
- LinkedIn, approached precisely: people who worked in your industry and have invested before.
- Customers and experts from your discovery interviews. Sometimes the operations director who understood your problem best wants a stake in the solution.

Bulk emailing hundreds of investors from a purchased list rarely works. Angels skim fast and discard anything obviously not written for them.

## What angels look for

At this stage there are few numbers, so angels judge what can still be evidenced.

The team: who you are, why you are the right people, how long you have worked together. A software company without technical depth among the founders is hard to fund; our guide on [how to find a technical co-founder](https://gruenderkurse.de/en/building-the-mvp/find-technical-cofounder/) helps if that is your gap.

The evidence: paying customers, pilots, pre-orders, or at minimum documented interviews. A smoke test with measurable demand outweighs ten slides of market research, which is why our guide on [how to validate a business idea](https://gruenderkurse.de/en/validating-ideas/validate-business-idea/) is worth working through before you pitch.

The plan for the money: what exactly the investment buys, by when, and what the next funding step will be. "Finish the product" is not a plan. "£150,000 takes us to 40 paying customers and £20,000 monthly revenue in twelve months" is something an angel can check you against.

## A first message that gets answered

Short beats long. If it reads on a phone without scrolling, it has a chance. Adapt this structure:

> Hi Priya, James Okafor suggested I get in touch. We build software that lets physiotherapy clinics automatically refill last-minute cancellations. Since launching in June, 14 clinics use the beta and six pay £79 a month. We are raising £150,000 to reach 40 paying clinics within twelve months. Would you have 20 minutes for a call? A one-page summary is attached.

The names and numbers are made up for illustration. The structure is the point: who referred you, what you do, one hard piece of evidence, what you are raising, one small ask. Attach a one-pager, not a thirty-slide deck.

## Get your house in order before the first meeting

Angels who like the first call will ask for documents, often within days. Having them ready signals that you run a tidy company, and it shortens the round.

- A current cap table showing who owns what, including any promised options.
- The articles of association or equivalent, plus any shareholder agreements.
- Signed IP assignments from every founder and contractor who wrote code.
- A simple financial model for the next 18 to 24 months, with the assumptions visible.
- Customer evidence: pilot agreements, revenue reports, interview notes.

None of this needs to be polished. It needs to exist and be consistent. A cap table that contradicts the articles is the kind of detail that turns a quick yes into a slow maybe.

## Tax schemes that help your pitch

Several countries subsidise angel investment, and knowing the rules makes you a better pitch.

**Angel tax incentives in three markets (2026)**

| | UK: SEIS | Germany: INVEST | US |
|---|---|---|---|
| Investor benefit | 50% income tax relief | 15% grant on the investment | no federal grant; QSBS rules may apply |
| Investor cap | £200,000 per tax year | €100,000 in grants in total | n/a |
| Company limit | £250,000 raised under SEIS | max. €450,000 grants per year | n/a |
| Company size | under 25 FTE, gross assets up to £350,000 | under 50 FTE, turnover or balance sheet up to €10m | n/a |
| Minimum ticket | none stated | €10,000 | n/a |
| Who can invest | individuals meeting HMRC conditions | natural persons resident in the EEA | usually accredited investors |

UK founders can apply to HMRC for SEIS advance assurance before approaching angels, which lets you tell investors up front that the company expects to qualify. In the US, most private placements to angels rely on investors being accredited, which the SEC defines by net worth above $1 million excluding the primary residence or income above $200,000 ($300,000 jointly) in each of the last two years.

German founders face a deadline. Complete applications for the INVEST acquisition grant must reach the federal office BAFA by 31 December 2026, and no extension had been published at the time of writing. The company first needs an eligibility certificate from BAFA, valid for one year, so start early if you are raising this quarter. Company form matters too, since INVEST requires a corporation; our comparison of [UG vs GmbH](https://gruenderkurse.de/en/incorporation-and-funding/ug-vs-gmbh/) covers the options.

## How an angel round runs

Expect months, not weeks. First call, materials, a second meeting with questions, a term sheet, due diligence, legal documents, money. Angels rarely move in sync, so a lead investor who commits first and sets terms makes everything faster.

Some founders look for engineering capacity before cash. Venture studios such as [OnlineBuilders](https://onlinebuilders.biz/ventures) partner with selected founders by contributing product development rather than only money, which can complement an angel round or push it to a stage where your evidence is stronger.

Next step: write down 20 people who might know an angel or invest themselves, and ask the five closest for one introduction each this week.

## FAQ

### Who counts as an accredited investor in the US?

Under SEC rules, an individual with net worth above $1 million excluding their primary residence, or income above $200,000 ($300,000 with a spouse or partner) in each of the last two years with the same expected this year. Holders of Series 7, 65 or 82 licences also qualify.

### How much equity should I give an angel?

That follows from the amount and the valuation you agree. Keep enough for later rounds, an employee option pool and a motivated founding team. Giving away too much too early can scare off the next investors.

### Should I raise on a SAFE, a convertible note or priced equity?

SAFEs and convertible notes postpone the valuation until the next priced round, which speeds things up. Priced rounds set the valuation now and cost more in legal fees. What is standard depends on your country; in Germany, for example, direct equity requires a notarised capital increase.

### How long does an angel round take?

Plan for several months from first conversation to money in the bank. Introductions, follow-up meetings, term negotiation, due diligence and legal paperwork each take time, and angels rarely move in sync.
